Blogosphere: Stamford Key To Commuter Care
CTPost
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is in the process of transforming the Stamford Transportation Center into a place that will better serve commuters, the city of Stamford, the people of Southwestern Connecticut and the taxpayers of Connecticut. Faced with the need to replace a deteriorating and a too-expensive-to-maintain 1987 garage, we embarked on a bold strategy that will replace and add commuter parking at the same time that we provide opportunities for transit-oriented development near the Stamford Transportation Center....

Blogosphere: Is Atlanta Bellwether For Transpo Funding?
Transportation for America
In my best grandpa voice: Way back in 19 and 96, as a reporter for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, I wrote a series of stories under the heading "Gridshock" that laid out the traffic hell facing metro Atlanta absent something resembling a plan. At the time, the Georgia DOT was wrapping up its $3 billion "Freeing the Freeways" paving bonanza, and the last planned extension of MARTA rapid rail was winding down....

Blogosphere: What Next For Transportation In Atlanta?
The Avenue, Brookings
When it comes to transformative infrastructure, there's no bigger tool for metro areas than local referendums. These regional votes give metropolitan areas an opportunity to sidestep the business-as-usual approach in Washington and initiate their own local vision-and to do so with resources typically counted in the billions. From major rail investments in Denver to a new central park in Oklahoma City, referendums are a vital way to reshape our metropolitan economies. And that's exactly what makes yesterday's vote in Atlanta so troubling for that region's future....

Blogosphere: LRT To Tacoma Is Not Seattle's Call
Tacoma Tomorrow
Sherwin Lee at the Seattle Transit Blog, writes that light rail extensions to Everett and Tacoma should take a back seat to rail expansion within Seattle. He goes on to say that transit expansion to Pierce County will diminish the effectiveness of light rail because of poor intervening land use between urban centers. While current Sound Transit policy on sub-area equity prevents Seattle from paying for light rail in Pierce County (and vice-versa), the conversation is somewhat moot. However, he brings up some points that are worth exploring... and some other more harsh points that are worth confronting....

The Bus Riders Union and several other civil rights organizations took to the streets in Los Angeles last week, saying the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority should restore 1 million hours of bus service that were lost over the last four years. Blogosphere: MTA Capital Construction now less 'boring'
2nd Avenue Sagas
Earlier this week, the MTA made, in the annals of capital construction, a relatively major announcement. On Wednesday morning at around 7:30 p.m., the final East Side Access TBM came to a stop six feet beneath the LIRR Main Line in Long Island City. The TBM named "Molina" made two runs and will now be scrapped. With its end, for the first time in three years, the MTA has no active tunneling machine boring through the city. ...
