"Public Markets: Anchors for Neighborhood Economic Development," the 2010 report from Reconnecting America's CTOD partner, the Center for Neighborhood Technology, has been added to the Research Center's best practices database. The report notes that sustainable employment growth comes from business creation, and public markets play a critical role as local business incubators. Attractive markets anchor a business district, the authors explain, and bring in a greater number of customers. The report includes case studies from the Ann Arbor Farmers Market, Eastern Market Detroit, Easter Market DC and Pike Place Market.

How Does Employment Affect Development on Transit Lines?

About two months ago the Center for TOD released a report called Rails to Real Estate. The basic gist of the report was that development along three new light rail lines was influenced by a number of different factors, some of which include income, employment proximity and walkability. But to me one factor stood out specifically. No matter where the vacant land was available, development was happening proximate to employment destinations along the corridor. As you can see below, along each of the lines that were studied, development followed employment.

Yesterday, the Center for Transit-Oriented Development (CTOD) released two papers on employment centers and their relationship to transit, which highlight the importance of connecting people of all incomes to job opportunities in all industries via transit. Today, the Brookings Institution released a report further documenting this critical link between jobs and transit, revealing the extent to which the transit networks in the nation’s largest 100 metropolitan areas are connecting residents to job opportunities.
