What Americans Think About Public Transportation

A recent study from HNTB Corporation takes a look at public transportation and what Americans think about using, improving and paying for it.
The HNTB America THINKS transit survey found 87 percent Americans who have access to public transportation where they work or live take advantage of it. In addition, 69 percent Americans feel there are many times when public transit is a better option than driving.
Biggest motivators for taking transit among people who have access to transit, according to the survey, are high gas prices (29 percent) and convenience (29 percent). The fact that transit is safer than driving was a motivator of just 1 percent of respondents. Among other findings:

In a report released last week by the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia, a bipartisan group of renowned transportation professionals issued recommendations and a call to action for Congress and the Administration to embrace a new vision for transportation in America. Last year, the Obama administration launched a first-of-its-kind effort to break down the walls between agencies that had, in the past, inhibited cooperative efforts to accomplish shared goals.The Partnership for Sustainable Communities, which brought together Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency, began in June 2009 with the goal of targeting resources to help communities strengthen their economies by developing more sustainably, removing regulatory and policy barriers to make it easier for state and local governments to access federal resources, and aligning the agencies' policies and priorities.

Among the Reconnecting America participants in the two-day Partners in Innovation National Symposium in Denver last month was Chief of Staff Allison Brooks, who moderated a morning plenary discussion of the success of Portland and the Bay Area in developing TOD affordable to families across a range of incomes. Joining Brooks were Ken Kirkey, planning director at the Association of Bay Area Governments, and Jillian Detweiler, land development planner, TriMet, Portland, Oregon.
