WMATA Study Added To Best Practices
June 17, 2009
More News & Resources:
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's 2005 study of travel behavior of people traveling to and from office, residential, hotel and retail sites near Metrorail stations has been added to Best Practices.
The purpose of the 2005 Development Related Ridership Survey was to update a 1989 study conducted by WMATA. The 2005 effort sought to determine if modal splits for these land uses have changed over time and whether certain physical site characteristics still impact transit ridership.
The information gleaned from these sites does provide a good look into the current state of travel at sites around rail stations and offer some explanation as to cause and effect.

Miami: Don't Cut Tri-Rail
May 29, 2009
More News & Resources:
Miami Herald
The proposed cuts to Tri-Rail service defy common sense. Ridership on the three-county commuter rail is way up, and there is no sign that will change as the recession drags on and gas prices edge up again.
Yet the three county commissions that fund the train -- Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach -- are cutting their annual appropriations in October. The other cause for the drastic service cuts is that the Legislature this year failed to approve a dedicated revenue source for the train... Read On

Transport Politic
There’s been a lot of talk in transportation circles recently about ensuring that the federal commitment to transit projects is as strong as that to the national highway program. Such a policy change would require a sea change in Washington, principally because it would necessitate a radical transformation of the transportation legislation, which defines how funding is distributed. In addition to more funding allocated to new corridors in general, the federal government must reform the manner in which it determines its share of total construction costs.

Bus rapid transit could be the next big thing in Twin Cities' transit.
