RA Board Member Meets With President Obama

Meridian Mayor Smith and U.S. Conference of Mayors leadership visit White House

The leadership of the U.S. Conference of Mayors met with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden at the White House on Friday, February 20. Among them was Meridian, Miss., Mayor John Robert Smith, A Reconnecting America Board Member.

Led by U.S. Conference of Mayors President Manny Diaz, the mayor of Miami, the 60 mayors were also meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder, Jr., Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Energy Secretary Dr. Steven Chu, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and White House Senior Staff.

Following the White House meeting, the mayors gathered at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, D.C., for a session with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson, U.S. Department of Energy Weatherization Program Director Gil Sperling, and U.S. Department of Justice COPS Office Acting Director Tim Quinn.

The nation's mayors commended President Obama and Congress for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which they said was in line with their priorities. The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more.
