Metropolitan Planning Organizations are beginning to take a more proactive role in planning and promoting compact growth along transit corridors: offering “livable communities” planning grants in Atlanta, requiring certain thresholds of housing density before funding transit extensions in the San Francisco Bay Area, and providing direct financial assistance for projects in Portland.
