New Urbanist Salon To Roll Out Of Bay Area

Come and see Reconnecting America and the Center for TOD in action at CNU in Denver June 10-14

New Urbanist Salon To Roll Out Of Bay Area

The Congress for the New Urbanism's 17th annual gathering is in Denver this year, June 10-14, and the Denver-bound California Zephyr will roll out of San Francisco with special cars for New Urbanists. Reconnecting America is helping sponsor this 1,400-mile salon-in-motion, which will follow the original transcontinental rail route, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful journeys in the world.

Among those hosting the salon’s conversation is Robert Davis, visionary founder and developer of Seaside, Florida, considered the birthplace of the New Urbanist movement. Davis is a principal of Arcadia Land Company, and a CNU board member.

The topic of this year’s CNU conference is urban recovery and the re-urbanization of America, the quest for energy efficiency, the dramatic growth in smaller households, and the yearning for neighborhood connections and freedom from the automobile. Featured speakers include CEOs for Cities’ Carol Coletta, Charlotte Mayor Patrick McCrory and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

But the conversation-with-a-view will begin on the train (no PPTs and windowless rooms here). Among the topics to be discussed are implementation of California’s SB 375, the bill that compels local planning agencies to plan for a redesign of communities in order to reduce vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions. Also to be discussed is the upcoming reauthorization of the federal transportation bill. Riders may be given written assignments and a short paper may be published.

Sign up for our New Urbanism 202 pre-conference workshop “Implementation Strategies for Transit-Oriented Development,” moderated by RA CEO Shelley Poticha. Panelists include RA board members Art Lomenick, managing director of Trammel Crow, and Will Fleissig, principal and director for development at Urban Villages, Inc.; GB Arrington, principal practice leader and VP of PB Placemaking; Nadine Fogarty, principal of Strategic Economics; and Catherine Cox Blair, program director at Reconnecting America.

Come and see us (and our Center for TOD partners Strategic Economics and the MacArthur Foundation award-winning Center for Neighborhood Technology) in action in seven workshops, on topics ranging from “How Are TOD Projects Surviving In This Market?” to “Measuring And Modeling Your Carbon.”

For more information about the salon-in-motion, contact Leslie Pickel, lpickel@seahavenconsulting.com.

The rolling New Urbanist neighgorhood for the salon will consist of four historic cars including a Vista Dome sleeper-lounge-observation car, a Vista Dome diner lounge car, a “roomette bedroom” sleeper car, and another sleeper lounge car.
